We cleared three tunnels yesterday + about 1800 feet of creek. The amount of litter at this location wasn’t bad but the debris blocking the waterway was a bitch to move. Jim and Ben helped with the tree trunk and mound of dirt. We put the trunk next to an eroding bank. After the pickup we explored new areas. There’s a homeless camp nearby that really needs some love. We’re not sure how to handle it. On one hand we want to clear the litter. On the other hand we don’t want to bring unwanted attention to their peaceful community. But they r e a l l y need sanitation services. As we move through the cities waterways we are finding this consistent issue. And from experience cleaning areas in Los Angeles the issue of homeless and litter is a consistent one. Yesterday was the start of our Earth Advocate program. Through our staffing partner Spur we paid our first worker to pick up litter. Possibly that’s part of the solution with the homeless. We are able to onboard a worker within an hour then put them to work. If we can solve the issue in Huntsville we hope to help in other locations.
To be continued…

Kela noticed this area needed a little TLC on her morning jogs. The area is North Figueroa St. at Temple in downtown LA. The LA Department of Water and Power is just up the slope and the LA County Department of Health across the street. The first phase was to clean up the litter. Second, with help from Tree Care LA, we cleared away the dead leaves and natural debris. We were all very proud of the transformation.

Pinhook Creek is a waterway that passes through Huntsville near downtown. It runs into Indian Creek which runs into the Tennessee River. It is a perfect example of what flows from upstream will end up downstream. That is why it is so important to clean all waterways to prevent it from dumping into larger bodies of water. This is phase one of our efforts to restore Pinkook Creek.

Carla Houston
Carla cleaned several drains on Hollywood Blvd. Did you know that storm drains in Los Angeles dump into the ocean without being filtered? Yeah, all the drips of oil, tire soot, cigarette butts, along with littered items get washed into the ocean.

Look what a little effort and an hours worth of work will do. Thank you Cole and Melissa for cleaning a ditch before the litter has a chance to wash into a larger waterway.
