Amelia Ayers / Huntsville, AL

Amelia Ayers is a vegan in the South. It is a little harder to navigate avoiding animal byproducts in a part of the country that wraps beef with bacon and cooks veggies in pork fat. Here are a few tips on how she manages her diet and what inspired the lifestyle in the first place.

“Think about it: virtually every atrocity in the history of humankind was enabled by a populace that turned away from a reality that seemed too painful to face, while virtually every revolution for peace and justice has been made possible by a group of people who chose to bear witness and demanded that others bear witness as well.”― Melanie Joy, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows

ME: When did you become vegan? – I went vegetarian in June of 2014 and vegan in August of 2015.

What inspired you? – My inspiration began when I started watching documentaries on Netflix about GMOs and other artificial products that were affecting my health.

When do you recall becoming aware that meat was dead animals? – I was about 22 when it actually hit me that I was eating animals. At that time, I became a vegetarian.

What are the biggest challenges of being vegan in the South? – Veganism hasn’t progressed as much in the South yet, so there are not many options to eat at restaurants. I mostly cook and eat at home. Also, there are not many health food stores available.

Were you raised in a meat-eating household? Yes, I was. However, my Parents have both been very health conscience so I grew up drinking smoothies and juicing all of the time too.

How often did your parents serve meat? – At least a few times in a day.

What is your favorite vegan dish?  – As of right now, my favorite dish is quinoa chili with fries…a recipe I found on eathealthyeathappy.com

What is the hardest animal product to avoid? – I don’t feel like it’s difficult for me to avoid any animal products simply because I know why I chose to go Vegan in the first place, but the most difficult thing to avoid is cheese – because it is put in almost everything. So anytime I go out to eat or buy something from the store/restaurant I always have to double check and be sure there is no cheese. haha

Did you notice a change in your body when you became vegan? – ABSOLUTELY. Overall, I feel healthier. I am able to understand my body and what it’s telling me and give it what it needs. Also, I haven’t experienced allergy problems the way I used to when I ate meat and dairy.

Do you think you will ever eat meat? – Never again.

“I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.” ― Abraham Lincoln

Thank you, Amelia, for sharing a piece of your story with us. And thank you, O’Reilly Meadows, for allowing us to spend time with your loving animals.

Not A Total Waste

Huntsville Alabama, did you know your plastic bags are recyclable through Operation Green Team? The plastic bags are crocheted into mats for the homeless. Drop your bags off at Home Depot at University Drive. There is a collection bin near the exit door. Also, you can take them to Huntsville City Hall, located at 308 Fountain Circle downtown.

To learn more about Operation Green Team, call 256-532-5326 or go to Huntsvilleal.gov/greenteam.

Microbeads: We Say Bye Bye

Avoid products with plastic microbeads.
bye bye microbeads
#Beadfree

In 2015 President Obama signed a bill making rinse-off microplastics “microbeads” illegal to manufacture in products in the USA after July 1, 2017; However the existing products are still on store shelves and available to consumers until January 1, 2018.

This year, please pay close attention that the products you purchase do not contain plastic beads. If the front label has words like “exfoliating” or “microbeads” please read the back label to be sure the exfoliating agents are biodegradable; not made with polyethylene, polypropylene, polylactic acid (PLA), polystyrene, or polyethylene terephthalate.

If you were not aware of this issue before now, watch this two-minute video made by The Story of Stuff Project. Many studies have shown that microplastics are being found in oceans, rivers, and estuaries worldwide. These tiny plastics are not being filtered out at wastewater treatment plants before the treated water is dumped back into waterways. We have to stop releasing these tiny pieces of plastics down the drain and into our natural ecosystems.
The non-profit 5 Gyres has been educating the public on this issue for several years with their #Beadfree campaign. Their recommendation for any products you already own with microbeads is to empty them into the trash then recycle the container.

Please help educate your friends and family on how they can help. With small steps, we can all make a big impact on preventing plastic litter from polluting our planet any further.

A special thank you to the Model for Earth in this post, Brittany Adams-Graner.

Earth Day / Pick It Up

Slightly behind on getting our pictures posted…

For Earth Day this year we participated in one of Model Environment’s core initiatives, preventing litter from entering oceans.

Picking it up before it has a chance to end up in drains, rivers and waterways is one of our favorite contribution to keeping this planet safe and healthy for all inhabitants. It is very important to bring awareness to the side effects of a wasteful society. So much of what we always find is single-use items. This time was no exception. The usual littered suspects- plastic bottles, straws, plastic bags, styrofoam cups, plastic bottles, cigarette butts, chip bags and because there are so many we will mention it again… plastic bottles. Thank you to all the volunteers who made an immediate impact for the health of earth.

Jasmina collected litter in Los Angeles. Brooke and Lisa were on a hike in Tennessee and picked up on the trails at Fall Creek Falls. The rest of us cleaned along the Tennessee River near Ditto Landing in Huntsville, Alabama. Here are a couple of adorable videos we posted on Instagram of Jasmina and Katie strutting their stuff with litter they collected. We LOVE models for earth!
